Call screening is a feature of the telephone service or device that enables the user to choose to accept the incoming call or divert it to another destination, typically to a message-taking service or device. The smarter versions use Caller ID to make alternative diversions, e.g. VIP callers are put through, while others are diverted.

My tollfree number supplier is RingCentral Inc. What makes their offering better is that you get more than "just a phone number". Call screening is just one of many features I get. The caller hears a message to the effect that the service is trying to find me, while it displays a pop-up on my screen listing the caller's number. I can take the call or let it drop to voice mail. This number is also my fax number and cell phone number. I give out just one number to my contacts. I use this toll-free number mainly as an an answering service and I get all my messages as attachments to email.
