Voicemail

Definition

When you leave a telephone message on someone's answering machine, it sits there until it is retrieved and deleted. When you are empowered to send the message to another phone number or to an email address, it becomes voicemail.

Features to Consider

  • Is it included with your toll-free or local number or does it cost extra?
  • Are the messages kept indefinitely or a fixed period?
  • Does the greeting time have a fixed length and does it cost more to extend the length?
  • Announced call transfer. The caller is placed on hold with a message saying that the service is trying to locate you. In the meantime, you can hear the caller's name and choose whether to accept or let it go to voicemail.
  • Can you jump to the next recorded message without having to listen to the current message in full?
  • Can you listen to all messages in sequence without having to press a button?
  • Can you choose to have all calls forwarded to you immediately?
  • Can you choose your area code?
  • Can you see the Caller ID with each stored voicemail?
  • Is the voicemail forwarded to a number of your choice or as an email attachment?

In Use

My toll-free voice mail service provider is RingCentral. What makes their offering better is that you get more than "just a phone number". It is also your fax number and cell phone number. You give out just one number to your contacts. I use my toll-free number mainly as an an answering service and I get all my voicemail as attachments to email.
